Four taster sessions you might want to try at our Summer Adult Showcase
With our Summer Adult Showcase just five days away, we have taken a close look at four of the taster sessions that will be held on campus this Saturday.
There is still time to book a place for the Showcase, which provides anybody interested in one of our adult courses the opportunity to try them out first.
It is taking place from 9am to 1.30pm with sessions lasting three to four hours and, included in the booking fee of £15, is a breakfast item and a drink on arrival.
We have a wide variety of taster sessions targeted at people in the mood for embracing lifelong learning and meeting like-minded individuals while discovering new skills and passions.
Please read on to learn more about four that you might like to try this weekend:
Have you ever wondered how professional decorators achieve such a quality finish? Then this taster session could be the one for you.
The course will cover basic preparation of previously-painted surfaces and cutting-in skills as well as paperhanging with a focus on trimming, jointing and internal and external corners.
Students will also be able to pick up some tips and tricks of the trade from our expert tutor.
Ash Stokes, our Head of Construction, added: “This course is suitable for those wishing to pick up some DIY skills, however it could lead to a 10-week award as an adult learner and then a potential career change. The courses we offer will give students an insight into the industry and whether it’s right for them.
“This four-hour course will give students a far greater understanding of the products and types of finishes available and also some skills to improve what they can do in their own homes.”

Whether you’re catering for a birthday party or just fancy spoiling yourself, cupcakes never fail to provide a creative way to rustle up a tasty treat.
In this three-hour taster session, our Health, Care & Education tutor Helen Perry will be demonstrating how to form flowers and hedgehogs from buttercream – a great little skill that she insists is quite easy to master.
“I will also share with the group the different ways to display their cupcakes in a bouquet and ways to prevent buttercream melting, along with the other tricks I’ve learnt over the years,” Helen pointed out. “I will be talking, too, about the benefits I have found baking provides for my mental wellbeing.
“As I always say, I use it as a form of therapy and mindfulness. I am hoping that as many people as possible will attend the taster sessions, as I am passionate about baking and hope that I can share that affection with others.”

There’s a bit more to digital photography than pointing your mobile phone in the right direction and pressing a button, right?
Well, yes, of course and our three-hour Digital Photography session will enable participants to explore their creativity and learn new techniques to produce snaps of all things great and small – indoors and outdoors.
The session will place a big focus on lighting and will be held in our photography studio.
It will provide the perfect opportunity to take up a new hobby or sharpen up your existing photography skills and innovative thinking.
