York has a long history of beautiful stone carving, ever fancied having a go yourself? In this 10-week course you will get an introduction to stone carving, learning a range of techniques from an expert tutor. You will be supported and guided through an introduction to this craft to sculpt your own creation. You will be equipped with tools and materials you need here onsite in our specialist workshops. So sign up and begin your exploration of stone with us.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, although enthusiasm and commitment are essential. Some experience of working creatively and being practical and ready to be experimental will be a bonus with professional development advice.

Course units

You will learn basic stone masonry carving techniques, with the opportunity to develop more complex skills. You'll learn how to use tools correctly in a safe manner and will explore your creative skills to carve stone for fun.

Assessments

There is no formal completion qualification and students will be able to work at their own pace, under the direction of our expert tutors.

Completion of this course can help students to progress on to various other Construction and Art & Design courses available at York College & University Centre.

Study methods

The course will be taught onsite, face-to-face delivery. Students will learn in a friendly and professional workshop environment with all appropriate health and safety provision.

Facilities

Students have access to our fantastic stonemasonry workshop. Tools and limestone will be provided. As well as specialist stonemasonry facilities, students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.

Additional costs

All materials are provided for you to complete the course.

Career progression

This course is for fun, however, you could progress on to our Stonemasonry apprenticeship if you wanted to take your skills further. You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge in stone carving to help you progress with your personal goals.
