This apprenticeship is ideal for those apprentices who have just completed Level 2 and would like to now further their knowledge and skill set within the motor vehicle industry. Employers are looking for highly motivated, highly skilled and fully qualified Motor Technicians. Completing Level 3 gives the apprentice all the requirements to move onto the MOT Inspector role after undertaking a further course.

Entry requirements

You must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week. As a minimum you should have 4 GCSE’s at grade 4 or above including English and Maths. You must have completed a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle Maintenance or have significant experience.

What will I study?

This apprenticeship will give you the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work as Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician and will include the following:

  • Health and safety to contribute to maintaining a healthy and safe workplace with due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment and follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle and follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in-depth knowledge
  • Contribute to problem-solving discussions and enjoy finding solutions to own and other people’s problems and suggest ways to make the business more efficient and contribute to its commercial growth
  • Share knowledge and skills and constantly learn in order to improve own performance and that of the business

You will complete an F-Gas qualification and produce a log-book of evidence demonstrating examples of your work throughout the apprenticeship which will form part of the professional discussion during the End-Point Assessment.

Method of delivery

Apprentices attend College on day release for the duration of the two years and train/work with the employer for the remainder of the week.

How will I be assessed?

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) will comprise of:

  • 2 Part Knowledge Assessment comprising of: Test 1 – 45 minutes containing 40 alternate format questions & Test 2 – 1 ¼ hours containing 60 alternate format questions
  • Skills test – minimum of 9.5 hours and maximum of 10.5 hours over 2 days
  • 60-minute professional discussion based on your log book of evidence

There are no specific College programme related costs, however you will be advised of any additional costs during your application and enrolment process.

Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Level 3.

F -Gas certificate.

Good course combinations

It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level or A Level programmes.

This apprenticeship has been designed to be recognised by relevant Professional Engineering Institutions and successful apprentices can apply for the appropriate level of professional registration (EngTech). Job roles you are qualified for include Diagnostic Technician, MOT Inspector, etc. or self-employment and starting your own business.
