GCSE Mathematics (Edexcel)
This is a widely recognised qualification that is often needed for employment or further training, the course is anyone for does not currently hold a GCSE Maths qualification or the grade they require and wishes to progress their learning.
The course is designed to develop competence and confidence in number, shape and space, handling data and algebra skills. This is achieved by encouraging you to play an active part in your learning. To this end there will be a wide range of tutor-led, whole class, small group and individual activities designed to help you improve, both in the classroom and independently/online.
Entry requirements
Students should be able to demonstrate that they have the commitment and motivation to complete the course and a grade D/3 in Maths GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2. If you don’t have any prior qualifications, you can come in for an assessment interview and we will be able to advise you on the best course for you.
Course units
During the course you will look at the following:
- Numbers - fractions, ratios, percentages, tax and insurance. Factors and multiples
- Algebra - using algebra, number sequences. Investigating the properties of straight lines and curves
- Shape and Space - angles and geometry, scale diagrams and plans
- Handling Data - analysis of data and investigating probability
- Applications using mathematics to investigate a given problem
Assessments
Three 1 hour 30 minute exams (typically held end of May/beginning June)
Paper 1 – Non-Calculator
Paper 2 – Calculator
Paper 3 – Calculator
Course fees
If you have not previously achieved a grade 4/C or higher in GCSE Maths, the course is fully funded, with no cost to you, with the exception of adults currently on a higher education course.
If you are resitting to improve on a grade 4/C, you will be liable to pay a fee.
Course progression
You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge in maths to help you progress and develop in a number of job opportunities to suit your personal needs and interests.
Dates & course durations
24th September 2024 - 1st July 2025, Tuesday evenings, 6pm-9pm.
26th September 2024 - 3rd July 2025, Thursday afternoons, 12.30pm-3.30pm.
All students will undertake an initial diagnostic assessment. Appointments will be made directly with each applicant to come into College and complete these once they have expressed an interest for the course. The assessment could take roughly an hour.
Study methods
The course consists of work in the classroom (teaching and problem solving), with an equivalent time spent on personal study and homework, including using online resources.
You will have one 3 hour lesson per week.
Facilities
Students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
Additional costs
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment.
