This is a one year course but typically followed with the Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering as Year Two.

You will develop a broad range of engineering knowledge and skills and an understanding of engineering theory and industry practice, covering manufacturing, mechanical and electronic/electrical engineering disciplines.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects at grade 4 or above including English and a grade 5 in Maths on the Higher Paper and ideally Sciences.

What will I study?

The first year of the course is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels and is a standalone qualification. Year One is made up of nine units; three mandatory units and six further units to give a multiskilled experience as advised by local, regional employers.

Year One - Advanced Manufacturing Certificate units may typically include:

Method of delivery

You will typically be in College three to four days per week, spending time in the classroom studying theory as well as in the specialist workshops and classrooms undertaking applied work.

You will study nine units across the week with specialist tutors, with each 1.5hr session being a separate unit. All units are assignment based with three to four assignments for each unit and these are spread across the full year. For each unit you are taught the skills and knowledge and then apply this to complete assignments to demonstrate your understanding; some assignments are report/essay based, some might be a practical task or experiment, some may be a presentation or teamwork activity, so there are a range of assessment methods.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is assignment based throughout the year using a range of assessment methods e.g. report writing, questions and answers, presentations, teamworking activities, practical activities to demonstrate understanding and competency, and essays.

You will complete approximately three assignments for each unit throughout the year, and every assignment contributes to your final grade. Achievement of the assignments throughout the year builds up your Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria. You will achieve a single grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction for the overall course.

Good course combinations

This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.

Your next steps

Whilst on this course it is possible to transfer, at any point, to most engineering apprenticeships; this is the course that many engineering apprentices will study. Alternatively, on completion, you would typically progress on to the second year of this course which is the Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (adding a further nine units).
