Early Years Educators are highly trained professionals who play a key role in ensuring that young children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe.

Entry requirements

You must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week. As a minimum, you should have 5 GCSE at grade 4 or above to inc. English and Maths.

What will I study?

This apprenticeship will give you the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work as an Early Years Educator and will include the following:
 

  • Support children's learning and development through applying knowledge of pedagogy and the observation, assessment, and planning cycle.
  • Develop secure and supportive relationships with children and families as the key person for children in their care, advocating for those children.
  • Provide respectful and responsive physical and emotional care to children, promoting health and wellbeing.
    Work with key individuals in children’s lives (for example parents, families, and carers) to improve all children’s outcomes and wellbeing.
  • Work in partnership with other organisations and agencies to support children’s learning, development, health and wellbeing.
    Support the implementation of change to improve practice.
  • Initiate and engage in continuous professional development, underpinned by reflective practice.
    Ensure compliance with child protection and safeguarding legislation, policies, and procedures.
    Work in ways that promote and support equality, diversity, and the inclusion of all children, respecting their social and cultural context.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Use technology to record and update information for example observations, assessments, reports, risk assessments, and safeguarding concerns.
  • Promote and engage in children’s play. Support all children to create and adapt the environment to reflect their interests and enable their learning and development.
  • Ensure legal requirements of statutory frameworks are met within policy, procedure, and practice.
  • You will also produce a portfolio of evidence demonstrating examples of your work throughout the apprenticeship which will form the basis for the interview during the End-Point Assessment (EPA).

  
 

Method of delivery

Apprentices will typically attend York College on a day release for the duration of the apprenticeship and work with their employer for the remainder of their contracted hours. During their time in College, apprentices will work towards developing their knowledge, skills and behaviours, and at work will consolidate their on-programme learning with the support of their employer. An assessor will visit the workplace every 8-10 weeks to discuss and monitor progress on the apprenticeship in conjunction with the employer.
 

How will I be assessed?

Continual assessment will take place throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.
The End-Point Assessment (EPA) will comprise of a 90-minute professional discussion with a minimum of 10 questions asked based on the portfolio that you have complied during your apprenticeship. There is also a 1 hour and 20-minute observation with questioning where you will be asked a minimum of 5 questions.

There are no specific College programme related costs, however you will be advised of any additional costs
during your application and enrolment process.

Early Years Educator L3 Apprenticeship.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid.

Good course combinations

This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level or A Level programmes.

Your next steps

This qualification will prepare students and assist them to progress to further education, higher education, as well as apprenticeship courses such as an Advanced Apprenticeship for the Children and Young People’s Work Force or Early Years Educator, which leads to vocationally related employment in early years and childcare with a licence to practice.
