Duration

The Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production, equivalent to three
A Levels, is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the media from both a practical and theoretical standpoint. The course is designed to provide students with a broad set of production skills across a range of different types of media.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 subjects at grade 4 or above including English and/or Maths. A Level 2 Diploma will also be considered as part of the entry requirement.

What will I study?

During the first year, students work on a large variety of projects. Each is designed to give students a different set of skills and allow them to experience lots of different types of media. Projects allow students to create music videos. They learn to photograph and design and make pages for print and web publication. They also develop their own radio play.

In the final part of the year, students take the skills and experience they have gained, along with their own interests, and create themselves a final major project. This can be anything the students want to make and may incorporate one or more different types of media production.

During the second year, students pick a type of media to specialise in and approach each project with that in mind. Projects are bigger and more challenging and build towards an extended final project. The final year of the course aims to expose students to real world scenarios and experiences.

During the course we use external speakers, trips and links with institutions within York and further afield to enhance the programme. We visit the BAFTA recognised Aesthetica Short Film Festival every year, have links with, amongst others, Aesthetica Magazine, York Art Gallery, York Museums Trust, UAL (London College of Communication) and York Mediale.

The development of creativity, knowledge and technical skills within the creative industries are fundamental to the work we do on the course. This programme provides students with creative freedom to explore their desired specialisms; to be film makers, animators, designers, broadcasters and so on.

Method of delivery

You will typically be in College three days per week. All units will be taught in a classroom/workshop environment.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through coursework and will require the production and maintenance of an online blog/website.

Good course combinations

This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.

Your next steps

The second year in particular is focused around student progression. We encourage all students to look at university options and support their applications to courses based on their specialisms. Students in recent years have progressed to courses that include the following: Animation [2D and 3D], TV & Radio, Film Production, Photography, Journalism and Broadcasting, Advertising and Interactive Media. We have experience of progressing students to institutions with good reputations and strong industry links and pride ourselves on preparing students for their next step in their personal and professional development.
