Craft Painter & Decorator Apprenticeship Level 3
Craft Painter and Decorators work in the domestic, commercial and public sectors and are responsible for the external and internal appearance of a building and its protection from water, rust, corrosion, mould, and insect infestation.
Entry requirements
You must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week. As a minimum, you should have 4 GCSEs or equivalent at grade 4 or above, including English and Maths. You must also have achieved the Level 2 Painter & Decorator Apprenticeship.
What will I study?
This apprenticeship will give you the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work as a Craft Painter and Decorator and will include the following:
- Work in compliance with occupational health, safety and environmental requirements to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of self and others at all times.
- Carry out their work in compliance with all current and relevant building regulations and quality standards, where appropriate checking the work of others for compliance.
- Lead the painting and decorating team in the delivery of the construction programme including interpreting technical specifications, manufacturers’ instructions and drawings, including digital information.
- Plan and organise the work site including setting out the work site materials and tools appropriate to the project for self and others.
- Plan the work to obtain optimum environmental, quality and schedule performance from the team, hand tools, power tools and associated equipment.
- Carry out complex painting and decorating tasks using specialist materials to industry standards and specifications.
- Work effectively on their own and supervise others.
- Maintain a clear and safe worksite at all times, promoting sustainable building practices.
- Carry out continuous professional development to maintain knowledge of current and future developments affecting the role and share with others.
- Proactively collaborate with stakeholders, clients and other construction trades, including programming and technical matters.
- Repair, modify, maintain or replace a variety of painting and decorating defects to different substrates and circumstances.
Method of delivery
Apprentices will typically attend York College on block release for the duration of the apprenticeship and work with their employer for the remainder of their contracted hours. During their time in College, apprentices will work towards developing their knowledge, skills and behaviours, and at work will consolidate their on-programme learning with the support of their employer. An assessor will visit the workplace every 8-10 weeks to discuss and monitor progress on the apprenticeship in conjunction with the employer
How will I be assessed?
Continual assessment will take place throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.
The End-Point Assessment (EPA) will comprise of the following:
- Observation with questions which takes 14 hours with a minimum of 6 questions.
- Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence which is 70-minutes with a minimum of 8 questions asked based on the portfolio that you have complied during your apprenticeship.
- Knowledge test which consists of 40 multiple-choice questions.
