VTCT Level 2 Complementary Therapies
This qualification provides and introduction for learners who wish to work within the complementary therapies industry (for example hospices, care homes, salons and spas).
Entry requirements
Level 1 English and Maths is required, as students will need to verbally communicate with clients and complete written work booklets and tests.
Students will be required to wear a plain black T shirt and black trousers. Shoes must flat and fully support the foot. Long hair must be tied up so that it is fully off the face and neck. Nails must be short and product free. Jewellery must not be worn for practical activities.
Course units
Learners will develop the following skills.
- Consultation techniques – to include understanding the needs of clients and when not to treat them.
- Basic massage techniques – to include classical massage movements and selecting a suitable massage medium for the client.
- Basic aromatherapy techniques – to include using pre-blended oils and adapting the treatment to suit the client’s specific needs.
- Basic reflexology techniques – to include basic treatment techniques such as thumb walking, finger walking, relaxation and breathing and adapting the treatment to meet the client’s specific needs.
Units studied include:
- Provide basic massage therapy techniques for complementary therapies.
- Provide basic aromatherapy techniques using pre-blended oils.
- Provide basic reflexology techniques.
- Introduction to clinic services and business awareness for complementary therapies.
- Introduction to principles and practice of complementary therapies.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology for complementary therapies.
- Introduction to healthy eating and well – being for the complementary therapy clients.
Assessments
There are no exams as part of this course, but students will complete practical tasks and work booklets.

Study methods
Tutor input and demonstrations are followed by practical application of skills and knowledge. Students will complete written work in the form of booklets.
Facilities
York College & University Centre offers 3 large fully equipped hairdressing salons, an inviting commercial salon reception, 2 media make-up workshops and 3 beauty therapy salons. Adult learners will have access to professional products and equipment.
