Art School: Clay Modelling & Plaster Casting
This course is suitable for all abilities and anyone with a genuine desire to learn the essential skills and techniques required to provide an introduction to clay modelling and plaster casting.
This is a course for beginners and people with some experience. You will learn how to model clay, sculpt a bust (creating ears, mouth, nose etc.) and then plaster cast using a two-part mould cast. You will build an armature, learn clay modelling techniques, learn how to mix casting plaster and the casting process. This is an exciting course and ideal for people wanting to experiment and try out new art techniques in a supportive environment with Yorkshire based Sculptor and experienced tutor Paul Digby, who has worked as an artist for thirty years.
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, although enthusiasm and commitment are essential. Some experience of working creatively and being practical and ready to be experimental will be a bonus. This course provides space, materials and directed learning with critical feedback, along with professional development advice.
Course units
This course covers a wide variety of skills and techniques including:
- Day 1: The tutor will deliver a talk on his work and the process of building the armature and adding
- clay. Students will begin sculpting the clay, focusing on key parts e.g. nose, ears, mouth etc.
- Day 2: Students to complete modelling and create a mould
- Day 3: Students will cast the mould and complete
Assessments
There is no formal completion qualification, the tutor will feedback throughout the process.

Course progression
Completion of this course could lead you to progress onto our Access to HE Art and Design course or one of our York School of Art degrees.

This course will run over three days: Monday 7th, Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th July.
Times: 9:30-15:30
Study methods
Students will learn in a friendly and professional workshop environment with all appropriate health and safety provision.
