City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Construction Skills - Carpentry & Joinery
This course is designed for anyone who would like to learn some basic practical skills. The Level 1 Award is a City & Guilds qualification which focuses on the basic practical principles for the absolute novice to build confidence and underpinning Knowledge. You should be interested in the Carpentry/Joinery industry and/or developing some home DIY skills, if this is you, then this is the starting point.
This programme is ideal for anyone who is looking to gain some initial underpinning knowledge, skills, and behaviours in the construction industry. You will learn how to use the specific tools and materials correctly and build upon your progress each week.
Students will learn, develop and practice the basic skills required for entry career progression in carpentry and joinery, or personal use in the home. The course will introduce processes in producing basic woodworking joints and how to safely use various hand and power tools.
Please note: Under the current funding rules once a learner has completed one Level 1 Award in Construction Skills, they will no longer be eligible for funding for another, regardless of the discipline.
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, a genuine interest in the subject and outstanding commitment & enthusiasm is essential.
Course units
A range of basic skills and techniques will be introduced including a combination of the following:
- Introduction to the construction industry
- Introduction to health and safety in construction
- Introduction to constructing through mortice and tenon joints
- Introduction to constructing angled halving joints
- Introduction to constructing bridle joints
- Introduction to constructing haunched mortice and tenon joints
- Introduction to constructing stub mortice and tenon joints
- Introduction to fixing architraves and skirtings
- Introduction to constructing and fixing hatch linings
Assessments
Practical and theory work will be assessed in line with awarding body requirements.

Course progression
On successful completion of the Level 1 Award in Carpentry & Joinery course, students can progress on to the Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery.

3rd December 2024 - 26th February 2025, Tuesday & Wednesday evenings.
4th March 2025 - 21st May 2025, Tuesday & Wednesday evenings.
Study methods
This course will be delivered by qualified experience tutors who are experts in their disciplines. Teaching will be done in a practical setting which will allow you to spend the time using the tools and resources.

As well as specialist construction workshops, students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
Additional costs
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop/smart phone and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment.
Career progression
Students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to progress in their current employment or enter employment in the construction industry. You may also have the option to transfer to an apprenticeship and then progress on to higher-level courses in construction.
