This one-year top-up degree course will provide you with an understanding of further key concepts and theories in business management. It creates an insight into how theoretical frameworks operate in the ‘real world’ and helps to develop transferable skills such as presentation, critical thinking, and research and a problem-solving approach to business and management issues.

The course attempts to create an awareness of diversity in the contemporary business world and will raise awareness of current trends in both business and management, which will enable those who possess the skills and interest to study further at post-graduate level. Similarly, it develops desirable employability skills appropriate in the contemporary business world.

Full-time and part-time available - 1 year full-time/2 years part-time. This course is delivered over two consecutive days, 4.00pm-7.30pm.

Entry requirements

Level 5 qualification in a relevant subject, such as a Higher National Diploma (HND) or Foundation Degree or equivalent.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment for each module takes place using a mix of methods including essays, reports, presentations, exams and research projects. There will be up to two assignments in each module and assessments will be spread over the year.

Skills you will learn

By completing the course, you will gain high level academic skills such as critical thinking and writing. You will work as part of a team to complete certain assignments and will be expected to develop arguments and present your ideas. You will gain critical business skills that will allow you to start your own business and will be in a position to look at specific contemporary business case studies to offer advice on how they can best develop.

Method of delivery

Group and individual tasks, seminars, lectures and workshops will develop your understanding of academic writing and reflective practice at Level 6. This course will be taught face-to-face.

Additional costs

No additional costs are expected for this course, although students should have access to an internet enabled laptop or PC.

Your next steps

The course progression opportunities are varied from the BA (Hons) course, such as Master’s degrees in the business area or into employment/progression within a business. An alternative progression route for prospective teachers is available via our PGCE programme.

Chris Burley

Chris has been a Business lecturer for 10 years and has over 25 years of teaching experience in a variety of organisations, including secondary schools and sixth form colleges. He previously worked in shipping, accounting at a pharmaceuticals distribution company and in the fraud department of a major high street bank. His main academic interests are micro-economics, ethics and customer experience management. Chris is a member of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development).

Linda Laverick

MA in Professional Development, CIPD Post-Graduate Diploma in HRM, Cert Ed, Linda has been a Business and Management lecturer for 30+ years. She has significant experience designing, implementing and delivering a wide range of HE programmes across a range of curriculum. Her experience in industry includes employment consultancy and employment and redundancy liaison, involvement in local/regional partnership committees at strategic level, dealing with redundancy, employment issues and legislation in organisations across the region. Her main academic interests are Strategic Human Resource Management, Employment Legislation and Equality and Diversity.
