Art School: Dressmaking Introduction to Stretch Fabric- Intermediate
This course is suitable for all, and covers a range of essential skills and techniques to provide a basic introduction to dressmaking with stretch fabric as well as taking skills and interests to a higher-level. It is recommended that you have a working knowledge of dressmaking and/ or have undertaken the dressmaking/ woven fabric course beforehand.
Students will explore materials and techniques and learn basic essential techniques and skills for working with stretch fabric. The course provides a basic understanding of safe dressmaking and sewing studio practice. The course can provide the support students need to follow up their own ideas and projects.
If students have a sewing machine at home, they should tell their tutor on the first evening; while sewing machines are available for use, it is very helpful for students to use their own domestic machine and will enable you to familiarise yourself with your own equipment.
Entry requirements
This course is ideal for those who have completed Dressmaking: Introduction to Woven Fabric or who have basic knowledge of using a sewing machine and pattern markings.
Course units
Students will cover how to work from a commercial pattern of their choice (stretch/knit fabric and beginner-level pattern) and if necessary, adapt to suit their personal needs.
You will learn how to use the correct stitches for sewing stretch fabric on a domestic sewing machine; there will also be a demonstration on how to thread and use a domestic overlocker. We will recap how to take body measurements, understanding key symbols on the printed pattern.
Throughout the course, students are encouraged to research ideas and to utilise existing skills. Most students focus on a final piece of sewing/dressmaking; however, tutors will ensure you follow up a manageable project within the timescale.
Assessments
There will be no test/examination associated with this course and students will be able to work at their own pace.
