Your guide to the 'Plan for Jobs' Scheme

The Chancellor’s Plan for Jobs

During the Summer Economic Update in July, Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced the launch of an incentive scheme which will reward businesses for recruiting new apprentices. This scheme means that participating businesses will not only be helping the economic recovery from the Covid-19 outbreak, but will also gain the opportunity to grow their workforce in a cost-effective way.

To explain why the new ‘Plan for Jobs’ was to be launched, Rishi Sunak said: “To give young people a better start. To give people everywhere the opportunity of a fresh start.” This pandemic has shown everyone the importance of working together. It has also given us the opportunity to pause, and rethink how to future proof businesses and our economy.

At York College, we believe there has never been a better opportunity for government, employers and the education sector to work together to launch the apprenticeships of the future.

Apprenticeship Incentive Scheme

Under this new scheme, small to medium sized businesses will receive up to £2,000 for each new apprentice they recruit until 31st March 2021. This funding is in addition to any apprenticeship levy they are already entitled to.

Making the right investment in training will improve a team’s skills, knowledge, performance and job satisfaction, ensuring key team members stay for longer. Apprenticeships have the added benefit of ensuring that fresh new talent can be trained to fit a company’s exact needs. For young people, who have been hardest hit by the coronavirus outbreak, this scheme offers a genuine chance of securing a meaningful job and future career.

Flexible Apprenticeships in Partnership with Mindful Education

York College has partnered with Mindful Education, who create award-winning online courses, to deliver professional apprenticeships which have been crafted to make teaching and learning fit in and around work commitments.

These apprenticeships enable the delivery of high quality, flexible training that empowers learners, minimises disruption to employers and delivers tangible results in the workplace. Innovative online analytics also means that we can effectively evidence the 20% off-the-job training requirement.
