Football team wins prestigious national AOC award
York College Women’s football team have added a prestigious national award to their long list of honours.
They have been crowned AOC Sport Team of the Year – the first time one of our sides has received the accolade.
The prize recognises the culmination of a two-year journey that has seen the team lift last season’s ECFA National Cup, win the ECFA Elite League title at the first time of asking and finish runners-up at the AOC National Finals.
Leeds City College Men’s basketball team picked up the reward last year in a category that is open to all Association of Colleges' sports teams up and down the country.
Commenting on the achievement, Sports Development Centre Coordinator Stu Horsfield said: “The team has been on a two-year journey which has seen them come out of Covid together to win the National Cup, the Elite League and finish this season as National Championship runners-up. In addition to their success on the pitch - and probably more importantly - their impact has helped create a legacy for women’s football at the College and they have laid down a marker for all our teams to aspire to.”
Stu went on to praise the consistent quality of coaching provided by Dave Morris and Mike Hall, who have led the team as part of our partnership with York City Football Club.
The Women’s Football Team is not restricted to Sports Development Centre students with talented players from all courses and subjects welcome.
“Anybody can join the team and we’re planning to build on this season’s success,” Stu added. “We will be looking to recruit talented athletes from right across the College.”
