York College Oxbridge Candidates 2020

As the region’s largest A Level provider, York College celebrated a phenomenal 100% A Level pass rate last year, with over half of students attaining high grades (A*- B).

This year the following students have successfully secured Oxbridge offers:

Annie Brown (formerly of Millthorpe School) to study Natural Sciences at Pembroke College, Cambridge. Annie is studying A Level Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths at York College. Annie says: “Having expressed, at the start of Year 12, that I was interested in applying to Oxbridge, I was immediately put in touch with people who have supported me throughout. I have received help with my personal statement, extra revision classes for the Cambridge admissions test and a really useful practice interview. My tutors have always helped me to push myself and get the most out of my courses.”

Emily Kelly (formerly of Boroughbridge High School) to study Modern & Medieval Languages at King’s College, Cambridge. Emily is studying A Levels in French, Modern History, English Literature and an Extended Project at York College, and says: “I enjoyed reading Russian Literature in English translation, and due to nuances within the translated novels/poems, I thought that I would be missing out if I couldn’t read the literature in its original language. That, coupled with a more general interest in Russian culture and the country’s growing presence on the world stage, led me to believe that learning Russian would be a difficult yet welcome challenge. In the future I would like to do further study in Russian, and possibly work in International or diplomatic services.”

Keturah Sergeant (formerly of Abbey Grange Church of England Academy) to study Classical Archaeology & Ancient History at Balliol College, Oxford. Keturah is studying A Levels in Ancient History, Late Medieval & Early Modern History, Religious Studies and Politics at York College.
Keturah says: “My Ancient History tutor really helped me with my university personal statement as well as preparing for the interview process. I’m really looking forward to university, after which I hope to become a Curator. I would really like to manage a museum where I organise exhibitions and educational visits for schools and passionate historians.”

Leah Oates (formerly of Outwood Academy Easingwold) to study Modern Languages (French and Spanish) at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. Leah is studying A Levels in French, Spanish and English Literature at York College. Leah says: "All of my tutors have really pushed me to go the extra mile and were really helpful when it came to the Oxford entrance exam, going through past papers and helping me after classes. I couldn’t have done it without their support.”

Eloise Peniston (formerly of Wetherby High School) has an unconditional offer to study English Literature at Somerville College, Oxford. Eloise has taken a gap year since completing her A Levels in English Literature, Psychology, Drama & Theatre Studies last year.

Vice Principal Glyn Jones is delighted for the students: “It’s wonderful news that we have five students who have been successful with their Oxbridge applications, and in the case of Eloise she is now able take up her unconditional offer for Oxford. The junior university ethos within the A Level Faculty at York College enables our students to prepare for university life and the pressures of high-level study. We will continue to work with them and support them, as we do all our A Level students, in the lead up to the final A Level examinations in the summer.”
