Congratulations Ethan Simmons!
Ethan has been offered a Degree Apprenticeship with John Sisk & Son after impressing the company during his Construction Design, Surveying and Planning T Level placement. He is now planning to study a Civil Engineering course at Teesside University, while serving his apprenticeship with the international building contractor.
Ethan, who is pictured with Project Manager Glen Kilvington (left) and mentor Steven Jones (right), said:
“When I came for Enrolment at College, I had planned to do A Levels, but I got talking to Andy – a tutor – and the T Level in Construction Design, Surveying and Planning sounded like a good course. It was related to the construction industry and still worth three A Levels, so I thought it was a bit better route for me, as it was directly linked to the profession I wanted to get into.
“The first year was more classroom based and, whilst I probably enjoyed the second year more because you spend more time on placement, it was still really interesting. There were modules that I didn’t realise you had to learn about like law and knowing the names of different bricks.
“I then enjoyed seeing everything happen first-hand on placement. I think that’s a really good way of learning because you pick up what you’ve been taught in the classroom a lot quicker.
“My placement with John Sisk gave me the opportunity to work in all the different departments of the company like engineering, pegging, design and stakeholders to see which I liked the most and could focus on a bit longer. I took a shine towards engineering and, even after I completed my placement hours, I asked if I could continue coming in twice a week to get extra experience and I’ve now started a full-time degree apprenticeship with the company and am looking to do a Level 6 Civil Engineering course at Teesside University.
“It's been great working for a big company that oversees a lot of different projects all over the world and is well-known, but still family run. Working on such a big project like York Central has also been good for networking and making connections.
“I think the placement element of a T Level massively helps in terms of getting a job from it. I might not have struggled necessarily if I’d gone down another route, but it would have been a lot harder, because doing a T Level means a company gets to know your personality and sees what you can do. It also gives you the chance to build relationships.”
Congratulations Leona Harvey!
Leona received her 3D Design results today and is now planning to study Product Design and Craft at Manchester Metropolitan University.
