Meet our 2023/24 GEM Award winners as IT Services Technician John celebrates 40 years' service

York College & University Centre have celebrated the last day of the academic year for teaching staff with our Annual GEM Awards.

The presentation afternoon rewarded members of the tutoring and professional services teams for their performance and contribution to College life during 2023/24.

Long service awards were also handed out to staff with IT Services Technician John Neale recognised for reaching 40 years of continuous employment, having started out in 1984 helping to fix and maintain manual typewriters!

Head of Organisational Development Sharon Devlin, meanwhile, was congratulated for completing 30 years of service.

John and Sharon were joined by Dawn Cooper, Deborah Hunter, Jamie Rank, Kathleen Dougherty, Mike Burdett and Tina Logan (all 25 Years); Adrian Webster, Alan Newell, Alex Godfrey, Caroline Hewitt, Chloe Black, David McNorton, Dayle Austin and Sandra Jackson (all 20 Years); Diane Waud and Mark Smith (both 15 Years); Andy Graham, Fliss Else, Helen Atkins, Mark Armstrong, Ron Stewart, Stuart Harvey, Taryn Woodhouse, Tim Foster and Sue Whitehorn (all 10 Years).

The first set of GEM Awards were given to members of staff who were judged to have best embodied College’s core values of Ambition, Success, Respect and Care.

Our Ambition Award winners were Fliss Else, Stu Horsfield, Maddie Cochrane and Rich Hall.

The Success Award winners were Rachel Broadhead, Matt Smith and Charlotte Wareham.

Our Respect Award winners were Ben Durnin, Neil Parry and Dave Flett.

The Care Award winners were David Mulligan, Clare Williams and Charlotte Usher.

Our other award winners were - Open Category: Neil Procter, Mark Dowson and Sonia Acosta Castillo; Health & Safety: Phil Simpson; Health & Well-Being (Students): Laura Heward, Kerry Charlton and Sandra Jackson; Health & Well-Being (Staff): Andi Hollingsworth, Caroline Hewitt and Jill Durkin.

Funding (Natasha O’Donnell and Lisa Sorfleet) and Admissions (Victoria Taylor, Angela Crosbie, Anna Wilkinson, Georgy King, Emma Woodward and Isobelle Eggleston), meanwhile, were joint winners of the Team of the Year prize.

Congratulations to all of our 2023/24 GEM and Long-Service Award winners, nominated staff members and everybody in the building who contributes to the success of our wonderful College.
