Lessons in London
Did you see our BA (Hons) Film, Fashion and Media Make-up students’ takeover our University Centre Instagram?
The theme of last week’s trip to London was to learn outside of the classroom, visit industry locations and gain a greater-depth understanding of the environments the students would like to progress into.
Just in case you missed it, here’s everything they got up to…
All aboard. Destination London!
First on the itinerary was a visit to the V&A, South Kensington.
Our Film students saw the Hallyu exhibition where they learned about South Korean film and media. The exhibition included colourful and dynamic displays and taught the students about the global impact that the Korean Wave has on the creative industries.
The V&A Africa Fashion exhibition was enjoyed by our Fashion and Media Make-up students, where they explored photographs, textiles, music and art and the impact these have on the fashion scene.
The trip then took our Film students to Versa TV Studios, where they had an incredible backstage tour and saw how a top-of-the-line studio is run. The group then visited Twickenham Film Studios where they were given a tour of the facilities in a very busy working-studio, followed by an industry application workshop.
Meanwhile, our Fashion students visited the Orlebar Brown fashion studio, where they gained insight into the men’s swimwear brand, whose parent company is the iconic Chanel. Wow!
Our Media Make-up students had the treat of a backstage tour of the National Theatre by an expert guide, who took them on a 75-minute experience of the well-known building. The most memorable part of the tour was a visit to the theatre’s fabulous wigs, hair and make-up department.
The students all then reconvened for dinner before heading to watch ‘Back to the Future the Musical’. You can’t have a trip to the capital without catching a West End show, right?
Next stop for our Film students - Warner Bros in Soho! The students enjoyed exploring the facilities, but they were asked to sign NDAs so don’t ask them about it…
It was then on to Lipsync Studios. The highlight being the honest and somewhat to-the-point careers advice from the team there. You can read their exact wording over on our University Centre Instagram page!
The Fashion students, thinking ahead, took the opportunity to go fabric shopping for their final major projects, which they are currently underway with. Best of luck guys!
There is just something about a goodie bag, isn’t there? Our Media Make-up students visited professional make-up providers, Precious About Make Up (PAM), to learn more about the brand and of course, for the kindly provided goodie bags!
Feeling inspired for the semester, our University Centre students headed back to York.
Amy Coates, who is studying our BA (Hons) Film Production & Professional Practice, said:
“The London trip was even better than I could have imagined. There were many great opportunities I would have never received anywhere else. I had the perfect mix of education and fun! This trip helped me develop my career interests and have an understanding of how the film industry works!”
