8th December - A Festive Celebration of Success for Media Make-Up at York College & University Centre

As the year draws to a close, there's no better time to reflect on the incredible accomplishments of our graduates from York College & University Centre’s Media Make-Up, Special Effects, and Hair Design course.

2024 has been nothing short of extraordinary, with our alumni making waves across the UK and beyond. From prestigious awards to international recognition, let’s unwrap some of the biggest success stories from our talented graduates who are turning heads in the world of Media Make-Up, Special Effects, and Hair Design,

First up is Tracy Hogg, a 2022 graduate whose talent and dedication have propelled her to new heights. This year Tracy won the Best Make-up Salon in Edinburgh at the Scottish Make-Up Awards for her thriving business, Velvet Mascara.

Tracy credits her BA (Hons) top-up degree with helping her grow from “a Beauty Therapist that does make-up to a Make-up artist that does beauty.” She describes York College University Centre as the “best possible environment for learning,” where she developed the skills to expand her home-based business into an award-winning enterprise.

Our second story takes us across the Atlantic to Hollywood, where Nadia Stacey, a former student from 2004-2006, has cemented her place among the industry’s elite. Nadia won the Best Makeup & Hairstyling Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards for her stunning work as Makeup, Hair, and Prosthetics Designer on the film Poor Things.

This Oscar win follows her BAFTA triumph for the same project, adding two of the most coveted awards in the industry to her growing list of accolades. Nadia has maintained close ties with York College, where she studied alongside current Programme Lead Sharon Barrington.

Next up is Freda Ellis, who is now an Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup.

Her Emmy Award recognises her outstanding work on the hit Netflix show Wednesday. Freda's contribution played a pivotal role in its success, earning her this prestigious accolade.

Freda’s story reminds us that dreams do come true, and great things are possible when you follow your passion!

Completing this year’s remarkable roll of honour is Lisa Parkinson, who took home a BAFTA for Best Make Up and Hair Design for her work on the critically acclaimed ITV drama The Long Shadow.

Lisa’s BAFTA win marks the final major award for our Media Make-Up alumni this year, following Nadia Stacey’s Oscar and BAFTA wins and Freda Ellis’s Emmy victory.

We are incredibly proud of the achievements of Tracy, Nadia, Freda, Lisa, and all our alumni.

What a year to remember!

11th December – Checkmate! A Festive First for York College Chess

Behind today’s advent door lies a story of a historic victory for York College’s budding chess team!

For the first time in the history of the York Interschools Secondary School Year 12/13 competition, a team other than Fulford School clinched the championship title. York College's newly formed chess team achieved the stunning feat with players Halen Harrison, Magnus Levergren, Koby Dickson, Peter Foster, Elias Neuberg, and Tatenda Midzi leading the charge.

In a nail-biting finale, Halen secured the team’s triumph with a series of clever moves after capitalizing on an opponent's slip-up. Earlier, Magnus had wowed the crowd with his Match of the Day win in round two, setting the stage for the team’s overall success. Their victory earned them the prestigious Ewan Cameron Chess Set and a spot in the Regional Championships in Darlington on November 19.

As the holiday season approaches, let’s raise a toast to these young strategists and their brilliant first chapter in the world of competitive chess.

Behind the twinkling advent calendar door lies a story of exceptional skill and dedication in the world of architectural joinery. Harrison Blackham, a York College & University Centre alumni, has carved his place in the industry, literally, by winning not one, but two prestigious national awards this year.

The talented craftsman earned the British Woodworking Federation’s Apprentice of the Year and the Institute of Carpenters’ Third Year Award, crowning his apprenticeship journey at Houghtons of York. 15th December – Results Day Throwback

In today’s blog we’ll be looking back at one of the highlights of our academic year, and one that is so important to our students, Results Day. We’re incredibly proud of our students and what they’ve achieved, and this year we had some real successes. A 100 per cent pass rate was recorded on 25 of the College’s A Level courses with 27 students achieving a full set of A* or A grades.

Three out of four T Level students, meanwhile, secured a Distinction or Merit as, for the third successive year, the College returned a 100 per cent pass rate for the technical-based qualification

Let’s revisit a few of our student successes below:

Ruby Wells:
Ruby did fantastically well in her A Levels, achieving A* grades in English Language & Literature, Sociology and Fine Art

Ruby, formerly of Pocklington School, progressed to study English Literature and Creative Writing at York St John University and said: “I’m surprised but really happy with my results. I think they reflect not only my hard work and personal efforts, but my experience at the College as a whole and the outstanding teaching and support I’ve received here.”

Ethan Simmons:
Construction Design, Surveying and Planning T Level student Ethan Simmons gained a Merit and was offered a degree apprenticeship with his placement provider John Sisk & Son. Ethan, was given the opportunity to study Civil Engineering at Teesside University in tandem with furthering his education on site with the engineering and construction firm.

“I am happy with a Merit and I’m looking forward to telling my Site Manager,” he said. “I think the placement element of a T Level massively helps in terms of getting a job from it.

“I might not have struggled necessarily if I’d gone down another route, but it would have been a lot harder, because doing a T Level means a company gets to know your personality and sees what you can do. It also gives you the chance to build relationships.”

Connor Inglis:
Connor achieved a Merit on his Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Practice (3D Design Pathway) and has progressed on to a degree in BA (Hons) 3D Creative Practice, a York School of Art course at York College’s University Centre.

He said: “I’ve always had a passion for art and I first visited the College on a Taster Day and really enjoyed the environment it offered.

“My tutors were amazing and really supportive and I’ve enjoyed my time so much that I’m now progressing to the University Centre where I’ll study BA (Hons) 3D Creative Practice. I’m really looking forward to that and, in the future, I might start my own creative business.”

Congratulations to all of our students this year, we’re so proud of you!

16th December - Honouring York College's Military Commitment

Behind today’s advent door, we celebrate a special achievement for York College & University Centre!

In September 2024, York College received the prestigious Silver Award from the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS). This honour acknowledges the College’s outstanding support for members of the Armed Forces community, including current and former service staff and their families.

At a ceremony held at York Racecourse, attended by esteemed figures like HM Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire Johanna Ropner and Air Commodore Adam Sansom, the award was presented to the College alongside 18 other organisations from the Yorkshire & Humber region.

York College’s Principal, Ken Merry, remarked:
"This recognition reflects our unwavering dedication to supporting the Defence and Armed Forces community. We are incredibly proud of our staff with military ties and remain committed to upholding the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant."

As an ERS Silver Award holder, the College demonstrates exemplary practices, from employing reservists to supporting their training needs and actively fostering a military-friendly workplace.

This accolade celebrates not just York College but the broader effort of regional employers who, as Colonel Jason Wright of the RFCA put it, recognise the "invaluable contributions" of veterans and reservists in the workplace.

A festive toast to York College’s commitment to service and community this holiday season!

17th December - Meet Heather Monaghan: Proving It’s Never Too Late to Learn!

At 83, many might expect Heather Monaghan to be winding down. Instead, she’s diving headfirst into creativity, and has pursued an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Art & Design at York College & University Centre. Inspired by her grandson Jake’s passion for art, Heather embraced the challenge of starting something completely new.

“I hadn’t touched art since school, where I was told it was my weakest subject,” Heather shares. Despite her initial nerves, she’s flourished in her first year, mastering disciplines like Digital Art, Print Making, and 3D creations, including a striking dragon sculpture and Andy Warhol-inspired chicken prints.

Heather’s journey isn’t just about learning new skills; it’s about embracing life’s endless possibilities. She says, “So many people give up on new things as they get older. But studying at my age gives you focus—much more important than any aches or pains!”

Driving 24 miles weekly to York College, Heather finds joy in the community and support. Her tutors and classmates, ranging from teens to peers in their 50s, have welcomed her warmly. Reflecting on her future, Heather is even considering pursuing a university degree—possibly by her 90th birthday!

Her story is a festive reminder, whether it’s a new skill, hobby, or dream, it’s never too late to unwrap something wonderful.

What’s one new thing you’ve always wanted to try? Let Heather’s determination inspire you to make it happen this year!

We have many courses for adults starting in the new year, why not take a look, and see if there is something for you!

20th December – The 25th Anniversary of the Merger: Becoming One College

In today’s blog, we’ll be marking a special anniversary that happened this year.

This year marked the 25-year anniversary of the merger between York College of Further and

Higher Education and York Sixth Form College, to form what we know today as York College & University Centre, which was hailed as a trailblazing decision by our Principal and Chief Executive, Ken Merry.

Mike Galloway – the first Principal of the combined institution in April 1999 – has paid tribute, meanwhile, to the two sets of governing bodies who “very bravely” supported his vision to pool together the resources of the neighbouring post-16 education providers. He also believes the College’s many achievements since the turn of the millennium – including an Outstanding Ofsted inspection in 2013 – are testament to the merger’s success.

Eight years after the merger, the College’s current building was opened on Sim Balk Lane, where the Sixth Form College had previously been accommodated. Money from the sale of the Tadcaster Road land that the nearby College of Further and Higher Education was based on helped fund the impressive new structure, where Mr Merry was appointed Principal and Chief Executive this year.

Speaking on the significant silver anniversary, he said: “The decision to merge York College of Further and Higher Education and York Sixth Form College was, at the time, one that people thought was unorthodox but, in reality, it was a trailblazing decision. We can see that as so many other colleges followed suit afterwards.

“Creating one College has led to a highly successful institution that has, for 25 years, served the community of York and surrounding area brilliantly well. The history of York College has been full of highlights during that period from opening the state-of-the-art new build on Sim Balk Lane, to achieving Ofsted Outstanding, to being one of the first and most successful T Level providers in the country and opening the new construction and engineering centre, as well as recently being recognised as having one of the best College training restaurants in the country.”

21st December: Bringing life to the classroom – York College & University Centre

In today’s blog we’ll be exploring our Immersive Room, a new facility which brings life to the classroom. The Immersive Room is a way of taking students out of their usual classrooms and workshops and immersing them in an audio-visual learning space made especially for their them.

As you enter the room, you’re enveloped in a multi-dimensional experience, with strategically spaced projectors that light up the walls and floor with images and video, creating a seamless field that stretches 360 degrees around you. The walls and floor are all part of the immersive canvas, offering a full-sensory experience. The auditory experience is equally immersive, with 3D surround sound that fills the room, transporting you to your chosen destination.

The Immersive Room can be used to enhance all  curriculum areas, and this term we’ve had many of our students take advantage of the facility. Our Digital Innovation Team have built a virtual construction site where students can learn about scaffolding and roofing in a safe environment, launched a strategy room for our E-Sports students to plan tactics for upcoming missions, made a sensory space to calm the senses, created a virtual spa ready for beauty treatments, and placed our students among snowy mountains, in tropical forests and on sunlit beaches.

We can’t wait to for our students to explore this room further and take full advantage of all the exciting technology on hand!

22nd December - Celebrating York College’s Female Sports Stars

It’s time to celebrate not just the holidays but also the extraordinary achievements of York College's talented female sportswomen. Each athlete has brought moments of brilliance, determination, and inspiration to their respective fields, embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship.

This year has been nothing short of remarkable for our female teams and individuals, with accomplishments that have left a lasting impact both on and off the field.

Here’s not one, but two key moments we have celebrated in 2024 with our female athletes:

Becky Sidwell

Former York College goalkeeper Becky Sidwell helped her country emerge triumphant from an eight-nation football tournament in Italy by keeping a clean sheet in a 3-0 final win over Lithuania.

Becky, 18, was part of the England Colleges FA representative team that lifted the trophy following a demanding schedule of four games in five days.

She played in two of the three group stage fixtures that saw the College Lionesses prevail against Canada, Ukraine and Montenegro.

The former student then donned the gloves for the final and, summing up the side’s success, she said: “I’d never taken part in a tournament of that nature, never mind it being abroad as well, so it was an experience like no other for me and to win it felt amazing.”

Chevelle Clarke

Rising rugby league star Chevelle Clarke has admitted she is “super grateful” that York College & University Centre have sponsored her for York Valkyrie Under-19s’ 2024 season.

Chevelle, 18, is studying our Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sports Coaching & Development, whilst also making a name for herself with the oval ball.

As well as representing the U19s, Chevelle made her debut for the senior Valkyrie side last year during a season in which they were crowned the best in the country as Super League winners.

This year, she will continue to train with the U19s squad twice a week and the seniors once and, on receiving the financial support from College, she enthused: “I am super grateful because it will help fund equipment that will help us progress and better ourselves this season as an Under-19 squad. When I first started here with York, I was on an Under-16s programme with only four other players, but it’s grown over the years and we’re now playing competitive Under-19 games.”

Chevelle then went on to help Jamaica women's national rugby league team secure their first-ever 13-a-side win - and is now being lined up to represent her country at the Olympic Games

23rd December - Celebrating Exceptional Achievements at our Annual REACH Awards

In June, York College & University Centre hosted its annual REACH Awards, an inspiring evening dedicated to “Rewarding Excellence And Celebrating Hard Work.” Held at York Racecourse’s Voltigeur Suite, the event brought together students, families, tutors, and special guests to honour the remarkable accomplishments of the year’s award winners.

The prestigious Principal’s Award was presented to Ella Clarkson, a inspiring Law student and the first in her family to apply for university. Ella’s outstanding achievements included progressing to the final 20 out of 700 applicants for a competitive degree apprenticeship, securing work experience with major law firms, and excelling in her academic pursuits. Her tutor, Clare Kirton, highlighted Ella’s determination, intellectual curiosity, and warm, approachable demeanour as hallmarks of her success.

The Governors’ Award was won by Sarah Craigen, whose dedication to education and community was exemplified by her volunteer work, charity contributions, and participation in thought-provoking discussions with the Archbishop of York. Her efforts to foster meaningful connections and her eagerness to learn earned her a well-deserved spot among the evening’s celebrated individuals.

The ceremony also honoured the memories of past students through heartfelt In Memoriam Awards. Highlights included:

  • The Liv Willo Award for Dance, presented in memory of Livia Wilson, a beloved Dance student who passed away unexpectedly in 2022.
  • The LIAM Awards for Art and Music, recognising creativity and inspiration in honour of Liam Miller, a former student remembered for his vibrant spirit.
  • The Caroline’s Rainbow Foundation Award for Psychology, dedicated to Caroline Stuttle, whose legacy emphasises the importance of safe and enriching travel.

Guest speaker Saskia Fenwick, a celebrity manicurist and salon owner, shared her journey from education to a thriving career. Her story was a testament to the power of ambition and hard work, inspiring students to chase their dreams.

Principal Ken Merry encapsulated the spirit of the evening: “Whether they’ve overcome adversity, achieved academic excellence, or shown unparalleled dedication, all of tonight’s winners are exceptional ambassadors for York College.”

As we count down to the close of 2024, this celebration of achievement reminds us of the incredible potential unlocked through resilience, determination, and community support. 24th December: Christmas Wishes from Mr Merry

Merry Christmas everyone!

This time of year is always very special, as it allows us to be grateful for things that we could otherwise take for granted. I know it is a great privilege being given the opportunity to lead our wonderful College as the Principal and Chief Executive, so this is not something I take for granted. However, I am constantly thankful for the team we have at the College – the people who (frequently) go above and beyond the call of duty, simply because they see it as the right thing to do. They are the people who make working for York College & University Centre such a pleasure.

I am also grateful for the wonderful students and apprentices that come to our College to develop their knowledge and skills. The team at York College & University Centre recognise that they come to us when they could go elsewhere, and this is something that drives us to be the best College in the region.

In terms of what we have coming up at the College, next year will see us launch our new strategic plan where we put a real emphasis on being a place-based organisation. It is through our commitment to serving the needs of our communities that we will be a stronger College, and we will work closely with a wide range of partners to ensure that this happens. This will be underpinned by our determination to ensure as many students and apprentices as possible go onto brilliant things when they leave York College & University Centre.

Our ambitions for 2025 are to be a better place to study and work. We are investing heavily in resources and initiatives to make this plan a reality so that our staff, students and apprentices get to use industry-standard resources and facilities.

Our amazing students and apprentices are at the centre of everything we do, and our wonderful staff are just as important. So, watch this space for some of the great things that will be happening next year at York College & University Centre.

In terms of this Christmas message, on behalf of everyone at York College & University Centre, I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a very successful, bright, and exciting New Year!
