Entry requirementsA minimum of 2 grade Bs and 4 grade Cs at GCSE including English Language (grade 4). You should have some basic keyboard ability, an interest in popular music and technology, and theory to around grade 3 level. It is not strictly necessary to have taken an exam in music theory, more importantly you must have knowledge and experience of music notation. You should also be able to competently play a musical instrument.
What will I study?Are you intrigued as to how pop music is recorded and how to make the finished product sound so good? Would you like to be involved in the technological side or the creative side of the music business? If so, then this is the course for you.
You will study:
Sequencing Software• Learn how to use the Cubase 7 software for both recording and sequencing
• Develop critical listening skills and understand how to mix/master to achieve professional sounding results
Composing / Arranging Music using Technology• Learn how to use Cubase as a tool to help realise and develop compositional ideas
• Learners are free to work within a range of styles, genres and instrumental resources (both acoustic and electronic).
• Chance to specialise in either songwriting or composing for film/TV (second year)
Working in the Modern Recording Studio• Each student will produce 2 songs in the recording studio from start to finish including recording, mixing and mastering (first and second years)
• Learn about microphones and effective recording techniques for a variety of instruments
• Understand how to operate a studio level mixing desk and what it takes to work as a producer/engineer in recording studios
The History of Popular Music and Recording Technology• Study the main genres of popular music from 1910 - Present Day
• Understand the major developments in music technology equipment such as recording technology, analogue vs. digital, synthesis and sampling.
Students will leave the course with a portfolio of work which will be useful in future employment or university applications.
How will I be assessed?Coursework (70 per cent)
Listening and analysing (30 per cent)
Each student has their own CD of the examples within the exam, and you work at your own pace.
