Why IT Support?

There is a demand across the country for skilled and qualified IT and systems support technicians, and employers increasingly need committed, well trained and enthusiastic workers. York College has good relationships with employers across the North Yorkshire region in the fields of Computing & IT Support.

By completing an Apprenticeship in IT Systems Support you will increase your skills, knowledge and performance and become a valuable team member. This will demonstrate to an employer that you have gained the right knowledge and experience to help them in their business and encourage them to invest in you and your career.

Qualification and Level

Intermediate Apprenticeship or Advanced Apprenticeship in IT Systems Support.

Most candidates start on an Intermediate Apprenticeship and progress to the Advanced Level although the level may be determined by the role in the workplace and previous qualifications.

What will be studied

Level 2 Intermediate NVQ Diploma in IT Systems Support

Mandatory Units:

  • Health and safety
  • Develop own effectiveness and professionalism

Optional Units include:

  • Technical fault diagnosis
  • Working with ICT hardware and equipment
  • Software installation and upgrade
  • System management
  • User profile administration

Level 3 Advanced NVQ Diploma in IT Systems Support

  • Interpersonal and written communication skills

  • Customer care in ICT

Are there any entry criteria?

To start the course you must be employed in a relevant environment for a minimum of 30 hours per week. You will also need 3 GCSE’s at grade C or above including Maths & English for the Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) and a minimum of 5 GCSE’s of grades A-C and Maths at grade B minimum, a level 2 Diploma in associated subject area and / or at least one year minimum industry experience for the Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3).

Method of Delivery

The knowledge qualification is delivered via distance learning using various modes (video training etc.); there may be an occasion when you will be asked to attend college for a tutorial on subject matter this will be discussed in the programme, for the remainder of the time you will work for your employer.

How is the qualification assessed?

For the NVQ you will build up a portfolio, which is a collection of examples or evidence of your work that demonstrates your skills and ability, including a work diary, photos, statements from your employer and colleagues and examples of completed tasks. Assessment consists of practical tasks, observations, oral questioning, written questions, assignments, projects and written tests.

The Technical Certificates are assessed using both practical and written tests.

The Functional Skills are assessed through on-line tests.

Duration

Each level takes a minimum of one year to complete.

What next?

After achieving the Intermediate Apprenticeship and Diploma in IT System Support, most employees will have the opportunity of further professional development within their company, in some case leading to promotion.
