Entry requirements

You will need to have completed the Beauty Therapy VRQ Level 2 and must have good practical Level 2 skills and experience, a good tutor reference, excellent attendance record and full commitment to practise, study, and the ability to work hard.

3 GCSEs at grade D including Maths or English (grade 3+)  or Functional Skills Level 2.

Duration

One year, 3-4 days per week.

What will I study?

Level 3 is a high level qualification expanding on the skills already learnt and achieved in Level 2 Beauty Therapy. 
You will also take GCSE or Functional Skills in English and Maths if you have not already achieved a C grade (grade 4) or above at GCSE.

To gain the full VRQ you must complete all of the available units listed:

Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities
Provide body electrical treatments
Provide facial electrical treatments
Provide body massage treatments
Provide electrical epilation treatments
Carry out massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils
Provide Indian head massage
Provide stone therapy
Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business

How will I be assessed?

Candidates are assessed during practical ‘on the job' or simulated situations. You will be required to provide some of your own models. Evidence must be shown in the form of a portfolio. Theory assessment will be carried out online; practical assessment will be continuous and students are required to demonstrate competency in a variety of tasks. Assessment will be graded Pass, Merit and Distinction.

What could it lead to?

Progression opportunities include Foundation Degree in Beauty, Holistic and Spa Treatments, Foundation Degree in Media Make-up, part-time course in Complementary Therapies Level 3 (available at York College). If you want to progress to higher education you must have GCSEs at grade C or above in English and Maths. You may also go directly into industry or self-employment. Past students have gained employment in salons, spas, on cruise liners and in a variety of retail outlets.
