This course is designed for those in an associate teaching role, or for those looking to progress to the full Diploma or Certificate in Education/PGCE.
The course covers the knowledge, understanding and skills required for session-planning, negotiating learning goals, designing teaching, design and use of resources, and learning and assessment strategies.
Applicants will need a Level 3 qualification in their subject area, or employer endorsement that they are working at an appropriate level. A Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) qualification is strongly recommended and students should have at least 30 hours of voluntary or paid teacher experience. On entry onto the course, students will be required to undertake diagnostic assessment in Maths, English and ICT and formulate an action plan based on the results. For the duration of the course they will need a mentor and this should be someone with appropriate subject-specialist knowledge who will be able to help and support students though the programme.
An application form must be completed and an interview may be required.
Dates and Times
Start date: January 16, 2017
End date: July 3, 2017
Time: 6.00pm - 9.00pm
Students will take the following units: understanding roles and responsibilities, planning to meet the needs of the learner, delivering education and training, assessing learners and using resources.
In addition to this they will undertake an action research project in an area relevant to their specialism. The teaching practice will have to run concurrently with the course and the student will need to evidence this through schemes of work, lesson plans, evaluations and resources.
Additional home study is required. The student will be expected to work independently at home. Home study usually takes at least five hours per week and forms an essential part of the course. It will be needed if students are to take a full and active part in class activities.
Exams and Assessments
For each unit, students will be required to provide written evidence to satisfy the learning outcomes. This will consist of a range of formal written academic assignments, documentary evidence such as schemes of work and lesson plans, and in-class presentations. Students will be required to produce a portfolio of appropriate evidence along with supporting documentation.
In addition, they will be observed three times during the course - twice by the course team and one a paired observation between a member of the course team and the student’s own mentor.
