Qualification

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) or Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) in Trowel Occupations

Entry requirements

To start the course you must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

In addition, for the Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) you will have a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade D or above including English and Maths (grade 3+). Completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) is required prior to starting the Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3).

Duration

The Intermediate Apprenticeship takes two years to complete.
The Advanced Apprenticeship takes one year to complete.

Apprentices attend College on block release (approximately one week per month) and work for their employer the rest of the time.


Why Bricklaying?

If you want a career in the Brickwork trade then this Apprenticeship is for you. The Trowel Occupations Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work as a Bricklayer in the construction industry. You will be working in a construction environment where your duties could encompass many areas of brickwork such as place and finish, none specialist concrete, set out and erect masonry structures and efficient work practices.

What will I study?

Intermediate Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations

Mandatory units:
Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace
Erecting masonry structures in the workplace
Setting out masonry structures in the workplace

Optional units include:
Placing and finishing non specialist concrete in the workplace
Repairing and maintaining masonry structures in the workplace
Installing drainage in the workplace

Advanced Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations

Mandatory units:
Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
Confirming work activities and resources for an occupational work area in the workplace
Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships in the workplace
Confirming the occupational method of work in the workplace
Erecting masonry structures in the workplace
Setting out masonry structures in the workplace
Setting out complex masonry structures in the workplace
Erecting complex masonry structures in the workplace

Optional units include:
Confirming work activities and resources for an occupational work area in the workplace
Confirming the occupational method of work in the workplace
Erecting masonry structures in the workplace

Additional study

Functional Skills in Maths and English 
Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)


How will I be assessed?

For the NVQ you will build up a portfolio, which is a collection of examples or evidence of your work that demonstrates your skills and ability, including a work diary, photos, statements from your employer and colleagues and examples of completed tasks. Assessment consists of practical tasks, observations, oral questioning, written questions, assignments, projects and written tests.

The Diploma is assessed using both practical and written tests.

The Functional Skills are assessed through online tests.

What could it lead to?

Many students progress from the Intermediate Apprenticeship to the Advanced Apprenticeship. There is then the opportunity to progress to higher level courses such as the National Certificate or National Diploma in Construction.
After achieving you will find that you have improved your full-time employment prospects and will be in an ideal situation to progress to such positions as a bricklayer, builder, masonry work, team leader or manager within a construction business or self-employment.
