During the York College VQ Awards 2017, held at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall in York, the Student Enterprise Award was presented by the Association of Colleges, Yorkshire & Humber region.

The £100 prize was won by a group of Level 3 BTEC Business students; the York College Business Bulldogs, who in February 2017 competed against 18 other organisations in York to win the St Leonard’s Hospice Accumulator Challenge. Using their impressive entrepreneurial skills the students turned a £30 loan into a staggering £3410.61 in just 30 days of exhaustive fundraising.

Their fundraising included organising a charity dinner and auction, with prizes donated by local businesses, and using their contacts to secure more prizes for a large-scale raffle. Other fundraising events included a ‘spare change sunflower’ and taking on a coast-to-coast cycling challenge – all in the College atrium!

Business tutor Rianne Hughes comments: “I am immensely proud of these students. For the whole month of February they were relentless in their efforts, organising, negotiating, haggling, promoting and carrying out risk assessments before carrying out their events. Watching the total mount up was encouragement enough to spur them on to make as much money as possible for such a worthy cause. Alan Sugar would have been proud of their tactics!”

When presented with their prize, the group whole-heartedly decided to donate their winnings to St Leonard’s Hospice. Student Josh Thomas said: “After visiting the Hospice and seeing how much they help local families, as well as the patients themselves, we worked together to raise as much money as we could during the 30 day period. Winning the AoC Student Enterprise Award is very much appreciated and the Business Bulldogs are more than happy to donate the prize money to the Hospice.”
