Thomas Macdonald, a self-employed Bricklayer for David Wilson Homes is aiming to represent the UK in bricklaying at the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017 competition.
Billed as the toughest skills competition in the world, WorldSkills Abu Dhabi will see over 1000 apprentices and students from 70 countries come together to compete to be named the top in the world.
Thomas, aged 20, and formerly of Huntington School, will take part in a four day selection competition from 29 March to 1 April at Stockport College where he will compete against other squad members from across the UK and two international guests from Canada and Denmark to win a coveted place in Team UK for WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017.
Mike Burdett, World Skills Manager and bricklaying tutor at York College said: “This selection event comes at the end of a testing and difficult training period for Thomas where he has developed his talents across a range of skills. I know that Thomas has dedicated many hours of practice to in preparation for this event and it is a reward for his determination and hard work. I would like to wish him every success now and in the future."
Thomas was selected to compete for a place in Team UK after being invited to join the WorldSkills UK International Training and Development Programme having excelled in the WorldSkills UK Competitions, the finals of which are held at The Skills Show.

Team UK for WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017 will be announced on 21st April.
