At the York College Construction Awards ceremony students and apprentices were honoured for achieving excellence in Carpentry and Joinery, Brickwork, Plastering, Stonemasonry, Professional and Technical Studies, Electrical, Painting & Decorating and Plumbing.
The ceremony, based on the theme of ‘Crafting Skills in Construction’, recognised nearly 60 individual student achievements and highlighted the College’s new £6 million Construction Skills Centre opening on the Sim Balk Lane college campus in September 2015.
The event was supported by the region’s employers who sponsored the individual awards. There was a formal welcome by the Principal of York College, Dr Alison Birkinshaw, followed by the presentation of individual awards by Shirley Collier, Chair of Governors at York College. A Vote of Thanks was given by Kevin Clancy, Head of Division for Construction at York College.
The following students were awarded Special Medals for Excellence:
• York Guild of Building Bronze medal for Excellence in Electronic Installations – Robert Fountain
• York Guild of Building Silver medal for Excellence in Joinery – Edward Williams
• York Consortium for Conservation and Craftsmanship Award Trophy - Laura Jeary
• Worshipful Company of Masons’ Prize – Joseph Livsey
Kevin Clancy, Head of Division for Construction at York College said: "On behalf of the whole College I congratulate the very talented award winners who are all future construction industry professionals. “We are entering a very exciting period with the opening of our new purpose built Construction Skills Centre in September. At a time when there is real growth in the industry, the facility will benefit our students and the construction sector. Currently there is a high demand for construction skills and at York College we deliver high quality training across all the construction crafts.”
