(Saturday 15th February - Sunday 9th March)
York College art and design students have risen to the challenge of creating pieces based on the theme of ‘Discovery’ for an exciting new exhibition at Nunnington Hall. The exhibition at the National Trust house showcases mixed media works, including sculpture, ceramics, paintings, mixed media, illustration, glass and enamel.
More than 30 students from different art and design courses put forward work for display, with the final pieces chosen including a ceramic crocodile, a paper city and 3D scenes from Alice in Wonderland. The exhibition is unusual as it mainly showcases 3D work, something that Nunnington Hall hopes to incorporate more of in their exhibitions programme.
Mollie Dodd, general manager at Nunnington Hall, said: “We are delighted to be working with York College and it is wonderful to be able to showcase such new and exciting artists. The quality of work is really high and we have chosen some very varied styles so we are excited to see visitor’s responses to the pieces. We are looking to develop more projects with local organisations and this is a really great one to start the season with.”
Nunnington Hall has a proud tradition of working with York College’s talented students; in 2012 a group of media students helped make a short film recreating life at the hall in the 1920s. The students will be following in the illustrious footsteps of successful artists such as Quentin Blake and The Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler who have also exhibited at Nunnington in the last year.
Ed Poxon, deputy head of Fine Art, Design and Craft at York College, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our students’ work to a wider audience and for them to experience working with an external organisation. Our courses encourage individuals to develop their professional practice skills to help with their knowledge of the business side of the arts, so this is a crucial element of that learning. We’ve really enjoyed working with the National Trust at Nunnington Hall and hope this is the first of many projects.”
The York College ‘Discovery’ exhibition will kick start Nunnington’s programme of exhibitions which change throughout the year. In 2014 visitors will be treated to displays from the renowned British Wildlife Photography Awards, Daily Telegraph cartoonist ‘Matt’ as well as a poignant exhibition commemorating World War One.
The Discovery exhibition is open from Saturday 15th February - Sunday 9th March (11am - 5pm). For more information visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nunnington-hall
