The annual York College Hair and Beauty competition at York Racecourse took place on 13th January 2014, with 250 full and part-time Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students participating. The event attracted local employers, with some acting as judges.

The competition included the following categories: 1st Year Blow Dry, 1950s make-up, Ladies Avant Garde, the Level 3 Skills Challenge, Team Bridal, Evening Style and Body Painting. There was also a demonstration by Watkins Wright of Thirsk.

Jayne Laverick, Head of Division for Hair, Beauty and Holistic Therapies at York College commented: “The competition provided a superb showcase for the work that goes on in the training salons at York College and in local salons, where many students work as apprentices. Our students thrive in this environment, using their skills to produce really excellent work. The competition is a great learning experience for them.”

The students winning first and second places in the York College competition will now progress to a regional heat in Gateshead. The winners from the regional heat then go forward to compete in the national finals, to be held in Blackpool in March.
