The list below showcases the Adult Learning courses we offer here at York College and you can now experience the courses in our free taster sessions! We have experienced tutors for each session and the courses are taught in the College’s state-of-the-art surroundings. Register now to secure your place and discover something new!
Simply choose your session from the list below, fill in a simple booking form and then you’ll be registered for your session on Saturday 6th May.
Each session will run from 10.00am – 12.00pm but please arrive for 9.30am to register your arrival. Refreshments including tea and coffee will be available.
Two hours of basic French introducing you to essential phrases to help you get by with shopping, ordering meals and finding your way around on your French holiday. Suitable for absolute beginners and those with very basic knowledge of French.
Two hours of basic Italian introducing you to essential phrases to help you get by with shopping, ordering meals and finding your way around on your Italian holiday. Suitable for absolute beginners and those with very basic knowledge of Italian.
The most basic of sign language courses, it offers people with no past experience the chance to try out the language. Learners get a brief look at the basics, which includes the use of the eyes and facial expression to get a feel for what it is like to be Deaf and to see whether they would like to learn more.
Delivered in the fun way it is.
A BSL Taster session is a single introductory session of 2 hours and typically covers some basic vocabulary, fingerspelling basics, facial expressions, referencing / pointing and deaf Culture.
A two hour introductory taster session to get you started on Mandarin, including basic greetings, numbers and introducing yourself. Suitable for complete beginners with no previous experience of Mandarin.
A session introducing wine appreciation and testing skills, understanding wine labels and characteristics of types of wines.
A two hour taster session on Italian bread making. Learn how to shape and enrich dough and how to achieve the Italian flavour in breads.
This two hour session will offer an overview of Business and Contract Law. The session will outline law that relates to Business-to-Business and Business-to-Customer interactions.
Learn and develop a greater understanding of the techniques and skills required to make presentations more effective.
An introduction into the set-up, understanding and procedures of MIG welding. This lesson involves both theory and practical. Please note you must bring boots and overalls to the lesson but welding mask and gloves will be provided.
Do you need an English and/or maths qualification for work? For an Access course? Or just to prove you can? Come along and have a go at an assessment and discuss the results and next steps with an expert. There will be 4 sessions across the morning, allowing 4 people in each. Please select the time you would prefer when booking.
You will be carrying out a mix of Level 2 and Level 3 treatments as this will give an insight into what can be carried out in each course. A demonstration of a paraffin wax hand treatment will be carried out and you will have the opportunity to have this carried out on you. You will practice on each other and swap over. There will then be a demonstration of a form of Indian head massage and you will again practice on each other and swap over. You will then be taken on a tour of the Beauty Therapy Department.
In this session you will use basic techniques in ventilation to create a postiche eyebrow.
An interesting and informative session where you can sample reflexology for yourself and discover the many positive health benefits it can offer.
Come along to have some hands on experience on long hair design from 1920’s - 1940’s, through to bridal hairstyles.
Knitting for beginners, or if you are a bit more confident, try out lace knitting! Please supply your own needles and yarn (4mm needles and double knitting wool suggested).
Find out about how maps can help us to understand the medieval city and then have a go at tracing its development through a variety of sources.
Learn and develop your skills in digital photography with this two hour taster session.
In this two hour session, design and produce a one-off piece of creative jewellery by exploring carving and casting processes.
Come and create some interesting images using collage and learn about different print processes.
Come and create a garment to take away using some of the industrial methods used in fashion manufacturing.
You’ve seen it on TV - now experience it first-hand! Come and learn how to throw a pot using the potter’s wheel!
York College runs two successful Access to HE courses that enable students to gain qualifications that will enable you to apply for a Science course at University. The courses run by the college are Access Science (Biology and Chemistry) and Access Science (Physics and Maths). Both courses take place over a period of one year and are generally timetabled over a three day week. The session will be split into two sections reflecting the content of the two courses. This will give you an opportunity to find out if the course is for you and what it involves. The session will be hands on and you will gain experience of some of the experiments that you will be doing on the course.
York College continues to run its popular GCSE Biology evening classes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. By popular demand we are looking at a day time class for those who cannot make the evening class. The course gives you the opportunity to acquire a Science qualification that is a prerequisite for many courses including nursing and teaching. Alternatively you may just have an interest in knowing more about the biological world. This session will give you a taste of the activities that you will be doing on the course and a greater insight into the course content.
Come and consider topics relevant within the ever changing social climate. This debate will cover key topics including Transgender, Leaving the EU, INDYREF2 and Trump: Is he for real? As well as brown sauce versus red sauce!
Ever wanted to learn how to build a brick BBQ? Then this taster session is for you! You will need to bring safety footwear and overalls to this session.
Ever wanted to learn the art of wallpapering? Then this two hour taster is for you! You will need to bring safety footwear and overalls to this session.
Ever wanted to learn the basics of skimming a wall? Come along and find out how! You will need to bring safety footwear and overalls to this session.
Indulge your inner geek and turn your Android phone into a remote control device for a robot. In this session we will be using AppInventor to build an Android app. The App will connect to a Lego Mindstorms Robot via Bluetooth allowing you to remote control the robot.Robots will be provided but you will need to bring your own Android smartphone.
In this session, you will discover the ways in which Prehabilitation (solving the problem before it exists) operates. You will learn about identifying, understanding and treating injury risk factors for the sport you take part in.
Talk and discussion on careers in childcare, with practical activities to be experienced through a child’s eyes. This session will cover Careers Working with Children, Advice and Guidance and the Importance of Play and Learning. Some practical activities will be ‘messy’!
A session aimed at providing a mini health check. You will have your blood pressure measured, calculate your BMI, discuss weight control and learn the benefits of well-being and a healthy lifestyle.

The Adult Learning Taster Morning sessions are free, however you may need to supply additional items to take part in the session. Please see the above descriptions for more information.
Please only register for one course, as each course will run for the full two hours.
Registration for the Adult Learning Taster Morning will close at 4.00pm on Friday 5th May. Each taster session has capacity limits and so registering for the sessions will be on a first come, first serve basis.
Please feel free to attend on the morning without registering for information and advice on the Adult Learning courses available, but please note you might not be able to attend a taster session if the session is full. Please contact the Info Zone on 01904 770400 for more information.
