York College Equality Strategy

York College previously researched, developed and consulted upon a Single Equality Scheme which demonstrated our commitment to equality and diversity for all individuals engaged in learning and working at the College.

The Single Equality Scheme has being refocused and refined to meet the requirements for an Equality Strategy as part of the new Equality Act 2010. We reviewed the progress made under our Single Equality Scheme in order to help us set out our future priorities.

Our Equality Strategy sets out the College’s approach to promoting equality across the full range of its activities. The strategy covers staff, students and other stakeholders and aims to ensure that all individuals have an equal opportunity to take part in all aspects of life. Set within the context of the College’s mission, values, objectives and strategies the strategy will identify how it links to, supports and is supported by them.

The objectives are embedded within the Equality and Diversity section of the College’s Strategic Plan.


Equality Analysis (Impact Assessments) formerly Equality Impact Assessment

Equality Analysis is a detailed examination of a current or proposed policy*, to see whether it has or will have a different impact on individuals or groups of individuals based on the grounds of, for example, race, disability, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion or belief.

The College conducts equality analysis assessments not only because we are legally required to do so but also because we are all responsible for making the College a happy, safe and welcoming place. The process supports us in promoting equality of opportunity, positive attitudes and good relations among students, staff and all people who come into the College, and taking a proactive approach to tackle unfair discrimination and improving services.

Policies have been mapped and prioritised to determine their level of impact upon College staff, students and the local community and policies that affect core functions of the College have all been impact assessed. An ongoing training programme is in place through the equality & diversity division to support this process.

If any constraints or inequalities are identified, action will then be taken. Amendments will be made if the policy is deemed to have or potentially have an adverse effect on or is not accessible to any group of individuals. Where language in the policy must remain, a glossary of terms will be added to the policy.

* Policy or policies is used throughout to refer to policies, plans, procedures and practices.

The purpose of this policy is to establish clear College guidance regarding equality and to establish key principles, structures and monitoring arrangements for the College. The guidance will be applicable to Governors, senior managers and all employees and students in the College, contractors, volunteers and visitors.
